New Fish/Ray tank: sump or canisters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nothing wrong with the canisters you have now, if you can go sump then I would advise on going sump and then you can combine both.

I too would use the canisters and a sump. A sump is easy to maintain. To where you have to dissesemble a canister. Filter socks can be used for mech on the sump and they work well and can be change out in a minute. TO where you have to take apart the canister to clean. Filter socks can also be thrown in the washing machine to be re-used. No soap or bleach...just a few cycles...a few spins and done. Mcmasters sells filter socks really cheap when you buy 10+ :)

I had canisters for some time. Then got a sump when i upgraded and it has made filter maintainance 100x easier.

which keeps a tankcleaner on a 180 with 20 3 inch cichlids , 1 fx5 or one sump with a rio 3100 900 gph, im not tryna thread steal i just dont fell the need for a new thread for a simple question thanks

That last line is spot on. I personally will never use a canister again. Why would you want to make more work for your self? I like things to be easy as possible and a sump is SOOOOO much easier to maintenance over a canister.

Thanks for the feedback people.

Just weighin up the pros and cons, it seems the sump is the way to go. Will consider this option more, maybe sell some canisters to pay for sump and pumps etc.

It's pretty cheap to build a sump and not hard at all. Main cost is a good pump. A really easy way to make a bio-tower for a sump is to use a rubbermaid type shelf unit from Wal-Mart or were ever you can find them. All you do is drill holes on the shelves and fill them with bio-media. The top shelf is the drip tray and were you put the mechanical filter pad. I actually buy filter pad material by the yard at the fabric store and cut my own pads. I build my bio-towers out of acrylic but I understand most people don't have that luxury and I have seen plenty of people use shelf units with equal success.
