New Fish Room - 11.5 X 6.5

Hello all. First post & great site!

I don't know if this fits the bill to be considered "Monster" or not but thought I would share nonetheless.

I am adding a wall to my detached garage & completing 11.5 X 6.5 room. Insulation, wiring, HVAC, etc.

There will be a rack of 6 - 40 breeders & eventually another 6 - 33 longs. More than likely I will build those out of acrylic.

All will be ran off of a centralized DIY sump.

I will keep & breed as many Cynotilapia species as I can fit. (Hara, Lion sp; Lion's Cove, Cobue, Jalo Reef, Afra Mara Rocks, Mbamba, Nkhata Bay)

I hope to have the room completed this weekend & start building the racks, sump & overhead reservior next week.

You should have 3 0r 4 sumps instead of one because then instead of every tank having a chance of getting the same disease, there will be 25% of the fish getting it, get what i mean?

Yes I do... That is my one fear with going with a centralized system & you are right, splitting them into four would decrease the risk of spreading disease ALOT.

I will certainly consider it.

I'd be scared to put tanks on a shelf heing supported with just an angled 2x4.

Well, it would be anchored to the wall but I see your point.. I can easily run the legs to the floor.

On second thought, I think I may run air lines & sponges on these tanks. For a variety of reasons...


Any thoughts on the sizing of the air pump & the sponges?

what did u make this room and tanks for? if u plan on selling th eoffspring will it really be worth it bc i assume ur putting $1000's into this project. still pretty cool i just hope you can enjoy your tanks inthere in the garage can u even see them all day or what?

agreed about the angled 2x4. remember each 30 gallon weighs like 300 pounds, and i wouldnt trust a 2x4 nailed into a wall to hold that for anything. same with the 40b's. 3 of those per shelf = probably over 1000 pounds per shelf. No way can those be suspended in the air unless you use rebar or something lol. So im guessing youre going to have a table for the 40s, and put the legs of the second levels table on the lower level? thats alottt of weight............. good luck, build it stronger than it needs to be or else you may end up with a bunch of wet smashed glass and dead fish on the floor

Because I couldn't fit them in the house... I am not spending 1000's. That is for sure. Most of the building materials, I got second hand for free & picked up the 40's @ PETCO for $1 / gal.

The area of the garage will be climate controlled, so I can see them as often & as long as I choose to be in there.
