Well I couldn't decide whether to add an oscar or a geo to my 80 gallon, soooooo.... I decided to get both. This means I will likely have to upgrade my tank in the future, but IMO its worth it :)

I traded in my turquoise severum for a Satanoperca Jurupari (not really a geo, but still an eartheater). He's pretty small (about 3 inches).

Then I went to 3 different LFS in search of a nice oscar, but had no luck. I don't know what it is with San Diego, but I swear every Oscar over 3 inches has HITH. One of them was even missing an eye! I think its because they are mostly trade-ins that have been kept in small tanks for too long. So, as a last resort I went to Petsmart. I found a 6-7 inch Tiger Oscar that is beautiful! Even better, he had been at the store since he was a little 2 inch baby, so they didn't have an updated price on him, so I got him for $7.99!

I'll try to get some pics later tonight. I just wanted to share cause I am really excited :)

I don't see upgrading in the future a must if your just going to keep those 2 in there.. Only thing you might have to worry about is oscar territorial issues, but size wise it's fine.

x2 . . . assuming those are the only large cichlids in there, should be fine . . . I would make sure the JD has some hiding places (caves, flower pots, etc.)

Nvm, I saw another post where he has a couple other cichlids in there, so I retract my statement..

Thanks guys :) I still need to get some pics.

Sicklid, you are right, I also have a Rotkeil Sev and a Blue Acara in with those two, so I will definitely need to upgrade.

My Oscar was hiding the first day because my sev was keeping him in a corner. So, I put the sev into a filtered rubbermaid container temporarily to let my oscar get more comfortable in the tank. I re-arranged the decor, so hopefully that will help keep the aggression down when I add my sev back in. My oscar has not eaten yet though. I've tried a variety of pellet and frozen foods, and every time I add food into the tank he lays down in a corner and sulks. Other than that he is active and seems happy, so I am assuming he will start eating once he gets a little more acclimated to his surroundings. I don't want to add my sev back in until my Oscar starts eating.

Anyways, thanks for the nice comments :)

my son purchased 2 lil oscars for me for father's day. he got them from petsmart, too. i must admit, petsmart often does have exotics and lil baby monsters at great prices. i just purchased a peacock eel for like $8. they also had 3 inch bichirs for $6, but they were just too small to go into my tank.

I know what you mean. I found my blue acara there as well as a pair of curviceps cichlids. None of my LFS carry them, so I was stoked when I found them for about $5 each:headbang2 Good petsmarts are worth checking out from time to time. I've see n the bichirs there also, but I don't have room in my current tank for them.... maybe when I upgrade ;)
