Can someone help me with the identification of this fish? This was sold to me as a Tyrannochromis Nigriventer but pictures on the internet show the T. Nigriventer as much lighter blue and without the greenish lower jaw. I am interested in the specifics because I want to set up a breeding colony.

My guy seems to be always dark blue. Or, is this coloration just a natural variant?

He's about 7" and swims around and about my 150 gallon peacefully with a couple of 8" Protomelas, an 6" Ahli and others.

Thanks for any help!

Look like a Nigriventer to me.

Thanks. The pictures of T Nigriventer on the web seems to show light blue coloration. In any case, I hope to get a few of these at a juvenile age and get a breeding colony set up.

Thanks again.

Amost definitely Nigriventer; there is a Southern and Northern variant of this fish yours most closely resembles the pics I have seen of the Southern variant. I'm so jealous gorgeous fish.....

Was he lighter in the lfs? Cool lookin fish
It showed its dark coloration in the tank I first saw it in. This one stuck out due to the intense coloration throughout the body and its fins. If there were others like this in that tank, I would have snapped it up!!!

I had never seen a Nigriventer live until this one. This is one of those fish that is forcing me to clear out an existing tank so I can set up a breeding colony!
