I picked up a couple of little guys strictly on impulse today. The first is a little jag. I know what you're thinking, with thousands of fry why would I buy a tiny jag? Well, the simple answer is it was neat looking. There were about 20 in my LFS and they were very white instead of grey like I'm used to seeing at this size. He also had a lot of blue in his dorsal for such a small size. I figured I'd pick him up and grow him out a little just to see what he's going to look like. He's in with my little HRP colony and attacks bloodworms with a vengeance, lol.:D

This picture without flash doesn't really show the colors I'm talking about. In person, it's much more dramatic. The blue on his dorsal is pretty awesome for so small.

The second is a texas. The main reason I got this guy is so when the dovii come on Tuesday there will be something smaller than the dovii in the tank. And I've always liked them. My thinking is that adding another small fish will keep anyone from zeroing in on the new dovii due to arrive Tuesday. Not a "throw away", more like a distraction. I put him right in the big tank and he's been pretty much ignored so far.

I think it's a male. Am I right?

Not bad for $13 (for both).:)

I'm no Texas expert by any means. Tell me all you think I need to know. Thanks for looking and thanks for this great forum.

I think that little jag alreadly has teeth.

Anybody else have any thoughts on the sex of the texas?

at that size i dont know how to sex them but take a close look at his head and if it develops some hump its male, that ill be till it reaches the 5 or 6 inches.

I think it's a carpintis cross with a tex. the only reason i say that is because the spots are too big for a tex and too small for a carp. Could be wrong... any thoughts?

Not carpintis, may be a cross, looks cyno to me. Kevin, male dovii is all spotted up, I was amazed when I netted him out, they are in a bottom tank and I just throw food down there. Female is already a little yellow, good luck, Hope they don't end up as lunch going in with the big boys. Ken

LOL, they should be fine. I haven't had a murder in the whole time this thing has been up and running, over a year and a half. ;) The grammodes and the female mota were right around the size of these dovii when I added them.

I know it's not a Parachromis (and sometimes that matters), but they haven't even given that little texas a second look. He's out swimming around, although he looks a little nervous.:grinno:

That is a pure Cyano male. Good luck with that Jag and keep us updated.
