Just got a 8-10" Florida Gar. I had to special order from my LFS...He said $30, so I said ok...

Went to pick him up today and I noticed that the nose is bruised up. I asked LFS about it, he said it was quite common for gars and it should heal eventually. He even showed me some needle fish that had the same problem.

Anyhoo, I told him that I didnt want it, but he said he'll let him go at COST for $20.

Question is, will he get healed up? I thought it was too good of a deal, plus I felt somewhat pressured since they "special order" for me, and they NEVER sold any florida gars before.

i think that him trying to discount the injured gar was a nice gesture. you have a very nice lfs guy and i would not want to ruin that relationship. my lfs's won't order any fish, unless i've signed an agreement stating that i will purchase the fish and i'd have to pay a portion of the total cost prior to the fish arriving. your guy is easy-going and very informal and that's a good thing. also, $20 is a good price. I paid $40 each for both of mine. You can buy meds to heal the snout.

Will it be better to just leave good old clean water and time, instead of adding meds? I have a fire eel along with it, and I am kind of skeptical about adding meds there.

Yes. Pristine water will likely be plenty to get him back into shape. Congrats on your pickup!

i just had an outbreak of ick in my 75 gal and i have several scaled fiah along with one tire track, whichof course does not have scales. i used the salt solution to treat the tank, because many meds are not reccomended for scaless fish. i agree with you. i'd give it a chance to heal on it's own. if that does not work, then i'd consider salt.

Ughh...For some reason, camera isnt working...trying to take pics from phone, but I cant seem to get a good one (all blurry, with crappy phone). As of now, hes swimming up and down on the corner of the tank.

Senegal bichir already checked him out; Will take off some rocks from tank to make more space. Hes a big bigger than I thought...I was wanting a 5-6", but I got a 8-10".

He's in a 75g until I get my 250g+ in a few months (just moved into a new house).

congrats on the pick up!

bump temp up to 80-82F and keep the fish well fed and water changes up...should heal up just fine. keep an eye on it to make sure it's not re-injuring itself as new gars tend to rub up on the side of tanks, etc.
don't move on to meds unless it starts to look infected or further damaged (and don't move without posting pics first that way we can recommend meds or not). good luck with the new fish--

Sorry about the pics, as previously mentioned...Camera is not working for some reason and I had to take pics from phone. It looks like the nose is bloody, but actually it is not. I guess it must been camera angle.

Tankmates are: Senegal Bichir 6", CK 6" (inside the cave), 6-8" Fire Eel (inside the log), and a 5-6" Lima FW Flounder (buried on the sand). No new tankmates will be added...
Note: CK (which I named him Heath Ledger...Batman/Joker? get it?), Gar, Fire Eel will be moved to big tank.

Tank parameters: 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 0-5 nitrates...1750 GPH pump (reduced flow), biowheel, sump, UV sterilizer and chiller. Temp is always around 80-82 (live in Florida).

Feed once a day, bloodworms, nightcrawlers, shrimp, tilapia. Feed live only once in a while, but through breeding of convicts in a smaller tank.
