New Flower Pup Won't Eat

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Even though she was dewormed once doesn't mean the parasites are gone. Due to the life cycle of a lot of parasites you will need more then one treatment to clear them.

lol DR. Charney...

OP they can be reel tough but give her a couple days. Is she by herself in the tank?

I highly recommend putting in a divider till she is pounding worms or shrimp. Far as getting her to eat, I have always had luck with earth worms chopped tiny or red wrigglers chopped. They are one of the most beautiful rays IMO, but most do poorly in a community type environment. Those that have kept them sucessfully, have species only and/or huge systems plus drip running through carbon/sediment filters. Far as breeding them, I believe from talking to others, that they mature MUCH slower than other species (4 yrs+)

X2!

I found that ghost shrimp worked good to getting a flower eating. what your experiencing is pretty normal with flowers IMO.
I also found that my flower would not eat regular earthworms, he LOVED red wigglers. They are smaller and have tougher skin.

They are very aggressive eaters once established...

Do not medicate this ray regardless of what people think on mfk flower rays are not at all like the other potamotrygon . I'd get it eating first than medicate if needed. Reverse osmosis is probably the only thing that will help. It's the shock that's messing with it. Turn lights out for a month if need be and get some black worms and no tank mates . Sand helps to.

Correct me if I am wrong but as for as I know 100 % of flowers brought into US are Wild Caught. I have seen nor read anything of them being bred here in US or N. America.
Like stated above, turn out lights, leave live blackworms and ghost shrimp in at all times so it can feed at will. Cover tank with blanket if needed. Sand will make them feel more comfortable.

She started to chew on chopped nightcrawlers, blood worms and a frozen silverside but just spits them out.

She's in a 96"x48" on a drip, lights are out and sand is with her. Wouldn't say she's super active but she doesn't seem stressed and is occasionally blowing in the sand and cruising the tank. I hope she comes around soon.

There have been some documented cases of tiger stingray breeding in North America in the last few years now:
