New Flowerhorn follow up questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I bought my flowerhorn for $12 knowing it was a low grade. He looked exactly like this young. Now that he is much bigger, he essentially looks identical to a trimac, except with a grey base color instead of yellow. He shows some blue and pink but is pretty drab overall in color. Still love him though. Great pet fish.
Do you have a pic? Did he get a kok of any kind? It’s kinda of hard to tell in the pic, but mine is kind of a greenish color. I’m definitely keeping him. His personality has really started to show and is making up for his lack of color.

Okiko isn’t expensive, I got two 100 gram bags both for $12
Hikari cichlid bio gold is $13.54 / 250 grams

Hikari cichlid gold is $10.77 / 250 grams or you can get a three pack (750 grams) for $21.87!

Even NLS Thera-a is only $16.30 for 300 grams!

You are definitely paying high end PREMIUM prices. When you can get a better deal buying the best fish food with the best ingredients! That’s only one popular online option I’ve priced from, I know if I take a little time I can definitely find better deals.

Some of those are definitely better deals. Are they better than okiko as well? Just wondering because my FH almost seems hooked on the Okiko. He’s started rejecting the bloodworms and shrimp, but eats the Okiko like an addict lol

All of those foods I trust more than okiko import crap.
Bulk is best deal. Annoy your wife or girlfriend with a 3 gallon bucket of fish food in the refrigerator. Best to get him accustomed to premium brands you can score locally at petsmart etc.

I’d go with the NLS. Just sayin.

Haha. I’ve got buckets, mason jars, gallon ziplocks in the fridge. Buy during cyber Monday sales, etc...

With any hybrid cichlid, there are certain percentages of a spawn that deviate from the line bred colors (perhaps up to 30% or more), and revert to dull... what some people call low grade colors. The same happens with the cyprinid equivalents of FHs (goldfish) where perhaps 30% will not be gold. And sometimes it takes a long time for colors to appear.
If the seller didn't let the fry grow out long enough to cull out that percentage, its possible a buyer gets a more dull or drab, than expected individual.
Just because 2 "red dragons" are mated together doesn't mean the all or even most of the fry will all grow up to be "Red Dragon" like.
Out of a spawn maybe only 10% will show the expected traits, and 90 % will need to to be culled.

Quite accurate figures I'd say (and when talking about Kamfa's that 10% figure goes down even farther compared to RDs) -- FH's are undoubtedly amongst the most culled fish in the hobby, if not possibly #1.

^ Fancy goldfish breeds are lucky to have 3% good conformation. Sometimes its best to cull entire spawns and try again.
Flowerhorn should be culled more than they are for sure.
