Canada eh?
Hey all i just got my new flowerhorn that i always wanted but never had the proper tank size to house one. My new tank in a 60g with a new Eheim 2217 canister filter!! :nilly:

My new flowerhorn is 5' and seems super happy, I just have a few questions/confusions that i hope you all can clarify for me :hitting:

Firstly:

1) What typ of flowerhorn would you say i have? the dude at the store said some name with "cherry" in it or something??.. also does he have the potential to be truly stunning in color??

2) Does there color get better as they grow?

3) Is it a male or female?? I assume male because of the already big kok for such a small size juvenile :naughty: ??

4) What typ of fish have others had success keeping with flowerhorns? ( i know your not supposed to but i want to try somthing)

5) lastly Ive been hearing the term "fader" floating around the board? what is it exactly? how do i know if i have one? do all flowerhorns fade?

ZZ male, Feed it a high quality diet to increase its coloration, theres always room for improvement if you got it from a Lfs.

2) Does there color get better as they grow?

Yes

3) Is it a male or female?? I assume male because of the already big kok for such a small size juvenile :naughty: ??

Its a male lol

A 60 gallon isn't really big enough to add tank mates, IMO you shouldn't even try to get a tank mate ><

5) lastly Ive been hearing the term "fader" floating around the board? what is it exactly? how do i know if i have one? do all flowerhorns fade?

Faders are flowerhorns that have midas/red devil blood that causes them to "peel" their traditional flowerhorn colors and become more like those of a Midas/Red Devil, Theres no sure way of determining a fader until it fades or if you know its genetics.

Thats a nice 5 foot flowerhorn you have their, largest I have seen.

1. ZZ Flowerhorn
2. It can but mostly depends on genetics.
3. Male
4. Not much, maybe a Blood Parrot but you will need a larger tank if you wanted more fish.
5. Faders are when this

turns into this

THe other guys have given good advice.

As for faders, most FH's which are going to fade will have done so by 5" (and definately by 5' !!!!!). However, there is still the chance that a FH can fade even bigger than yours, so you'll just have to wait and see !

This is what yours might look like when he puts on some weight and length (although yours clearly has more kok potential than my big boy) .... yours looks a bit underfed to me.

Wow thanks everyone for answering my questions and clearing all that up for me! I am so happy its a boy :)

LOL Chrisplosion, the comment on the 5 foot FH... my bad i miss typed, obviously meant 5" ;)

And hamfist ur absolutly right about him looking underfeed! that was my thoughts when i saw him in the LFS.. but its ok im beefing him up now that hes with me!
I really hope mine gets the beautiful red/pink that yours is displaying.. id be soo happy!!

thanks again everyone!
Cheers,

1. ZZ
2. I wouldnt give a def yes. Its possible that te color will get better. Lighter backgrounds help, most use blue. Quality food helps, I use variety.
3. Looks male
4. Depends on the FH

Thanks for the complements guys, you all rock :headbang2

So today's the 3ed morning since iv brought him home and iv been noticing his color get better already, hes looking less "brittle" and "Pixelated" then when i took the first set of pics.

Here's a update, let me know if its just my imagination

Oh!! i also have a few more questions :D:D

1) Is he a good grade/Good quality FH?

1) Is ZZ the lowest grade FH in general apposed to the other strains?

2) How much would YOU have paid for this specific FH?
