They make money with the filter. My argument to them is, why build a filter which only takes cartridges Hagen produces? Why not make a filter media holder similar to the design the have for the cartridges but allow the consumer to put any mechanical media of their choice in it.

honestly a number of filters are made to work with their own cartridge of some sort so its not something only they are doing we usually just find away around it but the cartridge for the g is made to last and can be washed and used again so that would not be the factor that turned me off of the product
How many times do you think you can wash a pleated cartridge before you need to get a new one?
Almost all filters out there do not use a cartridge. Fluval 05 series, Fluval Fx5 Eheim filters all are able to be used without cartridges. We don't "find" ways around them we simply customize the filter to our liking because they were built for that specific reason and do not use cartridges. The G series removes this feature and forces us to buy specific cartridges just like most of the HOB filters today.

pleated cartridges can be washed and reused many times i just think there is alot of hysteria over a filter that is not even out yet and is like anything else its probably a great filter for those that have the money to spend on the bells and whistles a camry and a lexus are basically the same car stock other than the price and a couple options but i still see alot of lexus on the road

ive returned 2 of there E series heaters in the last couple of months, they come with a 5 year warrenty and are brilliant but ive bought 6 and 2 were sent back.
were are they being built? if its china then 80% of there stuff will be returned.

Think of how many times you will clean the cartridges in a year. Then think of the expense every year you will be adding to your bills every year. I am not sold on the fact that these cartridges can be reused for the life of the filter. I highly doubt they can be reused for over 2 years.
I like not having to spend the round trip that includes gas , time and money to buy another cartridge just to keep the low flow filter running at optimum flow. I'll stick with sponges that can be reused for 10+ years

I'm always a bit skeptical about new "electronically monitored" equipment. It just makes me imagine all the problems that can go along with electronics. Remember how simple cars used to be to fix? Try fixing anything on a newer car without an approved diagnostic machine!
If it's anything like their overpriced new heaters, I'll pass. I wasted 50 bucks on that thing and honestly, looks cool and has some nice features, but is unable to keep a 100 gallon tank 10 degrees above room temp! Could've bought 2 jagers for the same price!
