you said water tyreatment process and it will be ready in a few days how long has the tank been cycling is the water parameters ready for fish , i would recoemd a few small cichlids and a smalll tetra school be sure to make sure you do your research

x2... You are cycling, right? I'm just not sure what you mean by water treatment process... As for stocking, I always love a South American community... I've got a 125 like this. A pair of angels, a school or two of tetras or hatchets, some corys... Lots of action all over the tank, with possibility for planted tank, TONS of color, and all the fish enjoy the same water chemistry. It's nice.

Bichir x 2
Geophagus x 3
Silver Dollars x 3
pleco

my .02 cents (Cdn funds!)

If you want a bichir do NOT get a pleco, its asking for trouble. Some will say they've done it and it works but why risk it?

In response to the questions about the water treatment, I bought the tank, filled it with water, and added the Prime/Stability/Clarity chemicals by Seachem. I'm letting the tank sit and filter the water for a week or so while all the levels balance out. The only thing not perfect (according to the water test) is the PH is still a bit off (8). Any idea how to drop that slightly?

Back on the topic of fish, I'm completely sold on the peacock eel, but I'm still a bit unsure about the Senegal Bichir. I do want to keep the maintenance as low as possible too (again, this is my first aquarium, so I'm using it as a learning experience).

Can you think of any other fish that have unusual appendages or colors? Something eye-catching and unusual?

Thanks for all your help and suggestions so far! I really do appreciate it.

you can do some african cichlids =).. they have pretty coloring.. or you can do the german balloon blue rams...you can do guppies =) hahahah

as for the bichir. i dink the sengal would be good for you.. they get up to like roughly around 1 feet or less... the albino sengal look pretyt nice. FYI i have one in my tank right now and it eatting canivore pellet =).. once a week would be blood worm and ghost shirmp.. but mostly canivore pellet...

Butterfly fish freak me out so bad... They're just plain scary. :D Dojo/weather loaches would also be perfect for that tank. And for the senegal... Besides feeding, bichirs are the easiest fish I ever kept. The main reason I wouldn't recommend them to a beginner is if they don't keep up with the hobby and neglect feeding times, but you seem responsible. The reason they're so easy is because they breathe air, so chemistry levels don't affect them as much. Of course I wouldn't put them in a tank with high ammonia, but they are hardy, and can live in almost any PH. Plus, big fish like them don't have to be fed every day.

And don't forget the ropefish if you don't like the senegal. I would recommend them to anyone. And clown loaches are always fun, plus they're too big to get eaten by most things.

Oh, and if you get the eel, KEEP THE LID DOWN WITH SOMETHING!!!

You're not cycling. Cycling is a process whereby ammonia is converted into nitrite, and then into nitrate. It requires beneficial bacteria to grow in your filter and gravel in order to process this fish waste. If you don't do this, your fish will sicken and probably die. Please take the time to research this process for success.
