This thing is only a few months old and tonight it just stopped working. I heard a noise when I was feeding tonight and found it to be coming from the fx5. It is on an 8' tank and I had to rig up a hose on the intake because the hose it came with was way too short for both in and out...I'm not sure the problem is from this but it's the only thing I can think of. I searched everywhere for a similar hose but couldn't find anything close. The pond hose they sell at hardware stores looks close, but the measurements on the circumference is off by a lot...so none of that would fit.

When I take the hoses off the tank it seems to run fine.As soon as they go back on it seems no water is returning to the tank. It emptys a 5g bucket pretty fast so I dont think the pump itself is clogged or defective.

Very frustrated right now...have a lot of big fish in that tank and I only have a spare cascade filtering it right now :(

Any ideas on how to fix this?

If you look in your book for the FX5 it will tell you what the MAX lenght of the hose can be. You might have just supassed that lenght and the pump simply can't pump the water that far. to much head loss.

Why not move the outlet closer and the inlet farther away from the canister.

agree with koop you may have had too put the filter on something to have used the other hoses and just bring the filter closer to the top of the tank

I think there is a max lenght in which the canister can be below the the water line. Try putting the canister on a stand your tank may be to tall? Thus the pump can not pump the water back into the tank.

Not sure if you're aware of this or not but using filter polishing pads in these things will burn the motors up if you don't clean them on a weekly basis - the white pads will literally bring the output to a crawl in just under 24 hours on a stocked tank, and since there is no bypass for the motor it will continue to just try and push through it.

I run mine with the middle basket empty aside from the side sponges, top and bottom are full of biological media with no polishing pads - initially I had run into a problem with it crapping out on me output wise every 24 hours like I stated, so I removed all of the polishing pads and haven't had the problem since.

Just curious if you've been monitoring the output by hand over the last few months - cleaning the canister, and if you used the polishing pads or not?

Any reason why it worked fine for a few months and then quit? I mean if it is too far below the tank, why would it stop now? The tank is on the ground in the stand and the stand is about 3' tall.

When I found out that the hose was too short to use if I cut it, I put it on in 1 piece. Maybe I will shorten that up and see if that helps.

Thanks for the info...I was too pissed to think :)

I have 2 baskets with ceramic rings and 1 with carbon. I used a pad under the carbon and all the baskets have the outside sponges. I will take a look and see if I can remove the filter pads. Thanks for the info.
