On my 125 tang tank I have an FX5 and an EHeim ProII 2026. This is what is in it:
(4) Altolamprologus calvus Ink Fin
(4)Altolamprologus calvus White Chaitika
(3)Altolamprologus compressiceps Black Nangu
(4)Altolamprologus compressiceps Malasa Gold Head
(3)Altolamprologus compressiceps Red Lufubu
hum, sounds like a good filter. but, there going for about $300 wow. Personly I have found the emperor 400 to be good and I have found it for $40.00. And the emperor do's about 400gph and the FX5 do's 600gph.
Thats what i have in my fluval. just the sponges it came with and the rest is all fluval biomax. it also came with a free container of fluval opti-carb, so i put that in too. after thinking about it, i might add another FX5 in the near future(1-2 months). But this time, i'll get it off ebay!
I have 2 fx5's on my 240gal and 2 seio power heads. If i didn't have such a large euro-brace i would add 2 AC 110s. Fx5 are great for biological but suck at mechanical.
Wow you must have a better (or empty) Fx5 to be getting 600 gals hr cause mine with the sponges and just bio balls in it, it takes about a week and a half the out put from the day i started. i'd be guessing alot less than 600 gal's

I was wondering that. the FX5 says on the box that the pump output is 925GPH but the water circulation is only 607gph.. does anyone know what that means????? also it stats that it can handle tanks up to 400 gallons, is that true???

I'd want more than 1 FX 5 on a 400,but it would probably work as a bare minimum for filtration.
The pump output get's diminished by the media trays and their contents. The more you fill the baskets the lower the circulation output. This also depends on the head (tank height)and the route of your hoses.
Joey fx5s are a great filter i have 2 on my 180 gallon, they are both filled with eheim ehfisubstate pro and the water is crystal clear and no trace of ammonia or nitrite.
I also get very good water circulation and all the crap gets pusshed to each corner of the tank, so easy to siphon up.
I think your idea of getting one now and maybe getting another is a good one.Good luck with your plans,
Stephen.

Something is wrong with yours then. If I want to "blow the water out" for a quick water change, I hook up another hose to the out put and run it out the door.. Turn it on and it shoots out 50 or so gallons in about 5 minutes. Maybe a little more.
