I just purchased a longnose gar 3 days ago. The gar has not eaten since I placed it in my 120 gal tank. The gar appears healthy but will not eat. I have tried feeders, floating and sinking pellets, krill and earth worms with no luck. The gar is about 13" long and is housed with a jaguar cichlid, a midas cichlid, a longfin bichir, and a sailfin pleco. Does anyone have any suggestions?:screwy:

pay attention to the water quality, since u using pellets too...

for the fish i just purchased, i always use live feeder to help him better acclimatized.....dont u ever use pellets for gar, after he settled in, i start using dead fish (fish consumed by human, i mean, i'm indonesian, maybe some regional conditions makes you hard to understand some phrase i said....), to save money.......

or

try changing the tank mate dude, may be he got stressed, cichlid such a noisy.....

good luck, wait to hear the progress from you....

Gars don't tend to do well with cichlids.. Don't worry they can go for long peridods of time without eating.. It's just getting used to it's new environment...

If you have small tank around place the gar in that. I usually quarrantine new fish as well as get them use to what I feed them. In the smaller tank it maybe easier to teach them to go to the surface to eat, try bloodworms first and when he starts to go to the top try pellets or food sticks.

I have 4 new small Long Nose that I got to eat frozen blood worms and two are eating Hikari Food Sticks. I have a florida/spotted on pellets/and food sticks for about 4 months now. Their should not be a problem with feeding pellets, alot of the gar experts on here have mentioned pellets are fine.

my florida gar wont touch anything but food sticks and other pellets. tried shrimp, prawns but nothing. seems to be doing just fine though.

no chilids man. NONE. exspecially one like a midas. your gonna kill your gars(longnose are notorus for hurting them selfs) qt him with a bunch of feeders
he will eat in time

gar is getting use to enviroment still stressed

They are some of the worst tankmates you could possibly have for a Gar...especially a Longnose. The Gar is very likely being outcompeted for food and is probably still acclimating as well. I would strongly suggest reworking your stock list.

plain and simple not eating is the least of your worries, if you dont get that gar out of there it will die. horrible choice of tankmates, not to sound like a dick or anything but seriously you should look into gar husbandry a little more. especially with a longnose, they have got to be the hardest gar to keep in aquaria. IMO
