hey guys i picked up a gar today that was sold as an alligator gar. pics up in a little bit, I hope it isn't as i don't want to house an alligator gar. i also used to have a gar and never new exactly what it was. it was sold as a crocodile gar. Here are the pics. i figured it was a florida just because they are local to me.

the new one has a fatter head, and yes its a true gar.

new ones pics are coming up soon.

that one kinda looks like a croc. any more pics? still have it? if not who does?

that pic is from 2003. I had it a couple years and moved it too a pond at my old house. it disappeared in the night. haren maybe?? never really knew??. something also took my tinfoil barbs out of that same pond and they were big.

given the photo and the year, i would say yes, that looks to be a crocodile gar "type I", which was what most crocodile gars were...shortnose x alligator hybrids. nice looking fish! definitely aren't many of those still around! sorry to hear it was lost...gars have a way of doing that in ponds (you're right, herons and other birds will pick them off...as will raccoons and other small mammals). nice pic though!--
