hey. i am new to gars and just today i got a florida longnose gar. (the people i bought it from called it a needle nose fish). but anyway i was just wonderin, how big do they get??? also is there anything that it can eat besides feeders? Also how fast do they grow???

Do you have a pic of the fish? there is no Florida Longnose gar. (But there are Longnose gar Lepisosteus osseus in Florida) A definite ID will help in answering your questions about the fish..

Well if it's a Florida gar like mine you can feed it market shrimp, cut fish, or f/d krill (mine eats all of these greedily). If it's a longnose others will have more input; I haven't kept that species.

If it is a longnose you should expect it to grow really fast. Mine went from 6-7" to 15" in 3 months. As far as feeding goes, mine would only eat feeders at first, but once I converted him off live food he eats anything (shrimp, krill silversides, pellets, etc.)

My gar won't eat pellets. It's funny too because he'll grab one now and then, almost like he's thinking "everybody else eats it, I'll give it another shot" but then he spits it out...and he has a hard time with that because the pellets kind of stick in his teeth.

When you make a post when the window pops up there's a paperclip on top, click on it and you go to a page where you can browse and add a pic from your pc. If you want to post a pic in an existing thread you need to choose "go advanced" because if you just quick reply the attachment option isn't there. Can't wait to see those pics.
