What are you trying to contribute there big boy?

I have been looking at some pictures and re-ID'd them and your probably right guys... all floridas ):

Shark Aquarium says they have spotteds... would those be legitimate spotteds?

It's possible that Shark Aquarium has legitimate spotted gars, but I would ask where they got them before buying one.

we probably should have figured that, and most of us did.

not likely at all.

Hmm.. Why's that? Are spotteds really that hard to find? I didn't know that.

spotted gars are generally non-existent in the trade. either they are directly wild-caught by hobbyists/fishermen (and the species is protected through most of its northern range; much more common in the south) or we've rarely had them available through our research (that will likely not happen much more as specimens have been mishandled in the past).
LFS 99/100 get FL gars, and i've not seen true spotted gars in an LFS (in person or via photograph) to date. Shark Aquarium has excellent stock, but they are 99.99% NOT spotted gars--

Thanks solomon... Thats some good info. Is that why spotted gars dont come up at all in the sticky even though they're labled?? What would make them sell them as spotteds..? I mean they are selling them at a price that would be a little high but still feasible for a florida gar...

They should include that somewhere in one of the sticky's so people dont make the same mistake that I and others likely have made.
