New Gars and an Update on My Other Gars

Thanks!

The Cuban gar definitely has grown pretty fast (about 2" in a month), but I'm fine with that since it was kept in "stasis" at the farm before Solomon got them; I want it to get back on track for the natural growth rate. What surprised me more, though, was the fact that the spotted gar has grown at least 1", so hopefully I can get it to keep growing fast, too, so that I can get it back on track as well as I can.

they were in stasis at the farm, but the CBGs were fed ad lib during the experiment, so they can definitely surge in growth and can continue to do so. i have the remaining members of that group on maintenance ration for now, on which they grow, but it's not ad lib.

that's particularly interesting about the SPG, however, in that those fish have been in "stasis" (although not the same level as the CBGs on their farm) for nearly 1.5 years (fed ad lib for first 4-6 months). will be interesting to see how it grows and continues to develop. the short-body SPG i have at home is developing greener spots like the adults now, even though its size is much smaller...yours will probably show more pattern enhancement as well.

great updates--

Sounds like I'm in for continued fast growth rates for both of the smaller gars, then. Both gars are getting pellets at least once daily (sometimes twice) with the gar chum replacing the pellets for a feeding every few days, so I expected the fast growth from the Cuban gar but not from the spotted gar.

I'm curious to see how big the alligator gars and longnose gars get before the end of the summer; I'm thinking at least 30" for the alligator gars and 24" for the longnose gars. The alligator gars will be transferred to the big pond soon, so they'll have a ton of food in the form of sunfish and smallmouth bass fry; I'm still not sure if I want to move the longnose gars yet. Thoughts on my growth predictions?

Just a quick update:

I moved my two longnose gars and two alligator gars to my 96,000 gallon pond earlier this week. I didn't want to move them just yet, but I had to due to filter troubles on their current pond combined with temperatures being predicted to be in the high 80's and low 90's during the later part of the week. I don't have any pictures from the move, but the gars seem to be enjoying their new home and are cruising around at the surface much more now; the alligator gars even began to hunt as soon as they were transferred (as evidenced by minnows jumping everywhere and then a gar surfacing soon after). Hopefully I'll get some Croc III's from these gars a few years down the road now that they have enough room to breed when the time comes.

looking forward to pics! they should grow nicely for you in the new pond! keep in mind, in terms of spawning:

male LNG ~4 years, female ~6 years; male gator ~5-7 years, female gator ~10 years+ --

Alright, I'll keep that in mind. It's those maturity rates that make me hope that I have male alligator gars and female longnose gars rather than vice versa; it's going to be a long wait to get hybrids if the alligator gars are both females!

In other gar-related news, I'm still on the hunt for YOY longnose gars; they should start popping up soon since I got my then four longnose gars (now two) on Father's Day which is coming up this weekend.
