new geophagus ID and sex please

picked him or her up today, im guessing its a male as his fins were much longer than any of the others in the tank, he was sold as a surinamensis, can anyone confirm this?thanks

Pretty sure that fish is Geophagus Altifrons. They are beutiful fish, congrats.

thanks for the replies guys, i must admit when i saw the tank with them in it i thought they looked more like altrifrons than surinamensis.

i think all the rest in the tank were females, ive already decided i need to go back and get him a friend!

Looks like an Altifrons, long filaments.

Not a Geophagus Surinamensis, yes Geophagus Altifrons.

Filament length rarely has anything to do with a given species. I have Geophagus Abalios with filaments just as long as any G. Altifrons seen around. The caudal fin spotting is why I say Altifrons, not the filaments.
