i think all the rest in the tank were females, ive already decided i need to go back and get him a friend!

I wouldn't. Either keep it by itself or keep a decent sized school of them. They are a social cichlid and should really be kept in groups of 4+ if you have the tank space. If you do have a male and you pick up a female, the male will be really hard on the lone female, especially when he is ready to spawn and she isn't. The only real aggression you'll get out of them is conspecific, hence the need to have multiple indeviduals to spread it around the group. Yours is very nice BTW :D

thanks for the advice, i dont think my tank would be big enough for more than another one so ill keep him by himself, hopefully getting a bigger tank in about a month and if they are still in the shop ill buy about 6 :)

thanks for the replies guys, i must admit when i saw the tank with them in it i thought they looked more like altrifrons than surinamensis.

The name surinamensis is a term importers and distributors use. It is an actual species but true surinamensis are very rare in the hobby and to my knowledge only being bred in Europe.

i actually live in northern ireland so maybe some of what are labeled surinamensis actually are?

geophagus in general seem quite rare over here, i havent seen one like this since my dad had one about 8 years ago.

would getting a shoal of smaller geophagus to go with this guy be a good idea or should they all be about the same size if possible?

Lack of normally sized lateral spot is the big giveaway ;)

Good point Japes! :D You agree though about the filament length not determining species right? At least not in the common "surinamensis" types found in the US (Altifrons, Abalios, Dicrozoster etc..)
