I Just recieved a gulper cat from rapps today, he looks great and very healthy.. when i first got him, he was swimming all over the plastic bag but as soon as i put him in my tank, he immediately swam to the bottom of the tank and stuck his head in between a rock, gravel, and the glass and didnt move for 5 or 10 minutes so i kinda motioned him to a pile of driftwood for more of a hiding spot area, instead of the middle of the tank.. he has sat there in between a rock and the glass for the past 4 or 5 hours and has not moved much at all, is this normal because he's new to the tank? i've had all the lights off this whole time and tried to make it the least stressful as possible.. i would think he would move around and explore the tank but he has not moved from that one spot.

Gulpers are awesome
1 of the greatest purcahases I've ever made

It's perfectly normal, at least I notice my gulper spends a lot of time either treading water statinoary or completely still.

Usually when you turn your lights off your gulper will begin doing weird things like mine was swimming into the current of the wetdry output and also doing like laps against the wall

Anyways,
good luck with the gulper!

He's acting much more normal now lol, i was only concerned because he was laying on the gravel not moving at all.. now he is swimming in the current near his hiding spot, much less concerning.. here's a pic

I got my three from the same batch as yours @ Rapps. One had me worried by doing the death spin, swimming and then head down and tail straight up. Another was doing the death spins too. They all recovered completely. Give them market shrimp, bloodworms etc...a.s.a.p. Here are a couple of shots and videos, I believe on the 2nd. or 3rd day after their arrival: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=372634

Enjoy it! It is a very interesting fish.

BUT, should be kept in a community with other gulpers, not alone.

Sweet purchase.

I have a pair of Gulpers myself.

Two very different characters activity wise.

One of them hovers above the sand/gravel all day. The other gets into the smallest space it can find and hides all day.

I have 1x T5 bulb on the tank, the one that hides rarely comes out when this is on (except when there is food).

However, I have also have some lowlight LEDs on the tank. This is when the catfish really come to life. It's great for me and it's great for them. It means I can see them and observe them because the light is bright enough, but no bright enough to put them off swimming the tank. Usually when I switch the T5 off and the LED on, the catfish come to life literally minutes after. They generally have a good swim of the tank for 30 minutes or so, then they tend to get into a formation, push their white bellies on the glass and hover face up towards the surface. Really great to see as the white makes quite an impact. They may go off for small swims after that.

ps. I'd always suggest getting 'warm white' LEDs ie the ones that look more yellow as I find this makes the tank look slightly blackwaterish without actually having tanned water. I also have blue/green moonlight LEDs which they like too (see pic below, white LEDs and Blue LEDs both on)

Not a great pic, but you can see them and get the picture.
