The problem with Plecos is that they're tropical fish that really don't like water below 70°F. They're also known for sucking slime coats off of certain fish, I've never heard of anyone keeping them with trout but I wouldn't risk it. Plus they're messy fish that create more bioload than it's worth for what they clean. They're nice display fish though if you ever want to start an all Pleco tank.
Thank you for this information. I'll keep on with sweeping the walls and bottom. This seems to be really cleaning up the bottom. As for taking a dive: That water is damn cold. Maybe if I had a wet-suit, hehe.
Do any other trout compatible fish come to mind?

Good morning. Here is a little update on my system
Fishhouse-Friday-14th-2016.jpg
You can see in the reflection that I've covered the section of Acrylic channel panel in the middle and over the fish tank. I used reed cloth, much like bamboo, but lighter. It helps keep the fish tank cool in the Summer. The temperature range last season was 60F in Winter, 62F in Winter. I attribute this consistency to the earth-sheltered design. BTW, there is no internal heat source in the fish house. We had the French doors to our living room open all Winter!

The sump tank is on the right where you can see the used sock filter hanging. The sump is 200 gallon. The is a constant water height fish tank with a variable height sump containing a Luguna 1800 gallon per hour pump.

Koi for a new outdoor tank I'll build this Summer.

Again man, your design and implementation is awesome!
I would love to have an indoor pond, but I can just see my dog running around the house with a fish flopping around.

I just joined because I was looking for compatible or companion fish for our 45 Brookies
They are 8 months old in a 2600 gallon tank. We have a moving bed biofilter a 30 gallon RFF and four small media beds for filters. There are five Comets in there as well. I'm looking for fish to help clean the bottom. Of course they will need to thrive in 58F to 62F degree water
What's the substrate? If it's sand then look in to you local Sucker species. I know many southwestern Catostomids are endangered but there's plenty of species that aren't as well.

Is this a home tank or is it for research? Either way I think I speak for everyone when I say we'd love some pictures!
Bullheads, Channel catfish, White catfish, Chubs, or something as simple as a few hundred Fathead minnows.

Our tank looks so much better after the water change and scrub-down. You can see the gray Koi pond coat again on the bottom.

I think I found a hobby that both my wife and I can enjoy and do together with a little luck for years to come.

I finally rebuilt our moving bed bio-filter. I didn't shoot any pictures of that process, unfortunately. BTW, we have culled another five monster fish from our 2600 gallon tank. Still, the poo is piling up on the bottom and the lily shelf, which I also cleaned yesterday with the byproduct of another 20% water change.

I tried to drain the MBBF, but it was not siphoning. I am begging to regret not having build a floor level drain hole through the masonry walls. It turns out that wasn't the issue. The drain on the MBBF was clogged with fish poo. Time to

I've never been able to drain it, because I hadn't taken Scotty432's advice and built it properly.

My excuse is I have too many projects. Water quality tests keep coming up with .25 nitrates Nitrites and ammonia also very low, so I never dealt with the improperly functioning MBBF. Not that I did it properly yesterday either. I did however take it completely apart and rebuild the inflows and outflows with a perforated pipe on the drain so the K2 doesn't get out. I shortened the outflow and reconnected the perforated pipe which has been doing a good job of keeping the K2 out of the sump. This repair gave more room to get the perforated air ring down in the bottom of the MBBF. Getting the MBBF out was a minor nightmare which could have been avoided if I had given just a little more room in the greenhouse for the RFF and MBBF filters.

We had a nice little 1 pound trout for dinner last night. Baked with lemon pepper and lemon. Delicious it was. I guess we're down to 30 Brook trout most of which I also guess are around a pound. Our digital scale displays the mode so small, I can't read it. I wonder if what I thought was a kilo wasn't in pounds mode?

It doesn't matter, what does is one fish even the smallest is a meal for two!

We took a nice break this morning, but got going around nine or ten. The biofilter took a long time so I finally got out in the rock pit excavation project around four. These pictures are the accomplishment out there.

Trailer isn't full but I'm happy to bust and load this amount in four or so hours.

That wheelbarrow is putting the hurts on my hips and feet something fierce. Plus, we got a rain/hail storm that has all that dirt weighing in at an uncomfortable level for my old bones.
The depth of the Limestone rocks is almost all the way across at the level it needs to be to keep this floor at the same height as the other floors in the house, because damn, I think I'll need a wheel-chair if I make it to 70.

Dogs don't much care for all the banging. They are happier when I'm done.
