New Guy Here, Northern Pike

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i caught a northern like the one in the pic when i was twelve fought me for hours finally he broke free man that was the toughest mother i've ever come across sad thing was i had him close to shore for an hour in the rain and ever time the net got close bam he take off just couldnt tire em out

I caught a 14 pounder in MN. Biggest fish I ever caught.

catch them on a regular basis - every body of water in the area seems to have them - you could say they are the bass of the north.

Catch 7-15 lbers on a regular basis
28 lber is personal record
45 lber caught by relative

I've witnessed a pike sneak up on a family of ducks and pick off a duckling :headbang2

Yeah, they are averywere up there. My pops has one mounted and it is about 25lbs. The first time I seen it I was like "that had to be the biggest fish in the lake!" Then he showed me a picture from that fishing trip and they had like 10 40" northerns hanging on a log. This was in the late 70's some were in Canada.

I remember a kid who was washing his hands in a lake in MN got bit by a northern or musky and ended up gettin like 150 stitches on his hands. They tried netting the lake and found no monster northern or musky. Anybody have any memory of this, it was in the news and stuff.

Yeah, RedFins, Glass, and Chain are about your only options for home aquaria...:(

The glass pickerel break easy.

Softturtle...I remember reading something about a pike attack not long ago. I nthe one I read about the pike bit the kids leg and the kid reached down and it then bit his hand.

hey if you want a "mini-pike" just get a mudminnow of some find. these guys are in the same family asyour pike and thet're ambush preditors as well(only with much smaller things)! i don't know exactly how big they get but they should reach only a few inches in length. and because of thier small size you will be looking at a much smaller tank as well. so you can fit a few of these little guys in a 50g tank. :woot:

ps-sorry for mis spelling if any :tropicalf

Your right, mudminnows are related to pike. They are not in the same family though but tey are in the same order, the Esociforms. They belong to the family Umbridae. Pike belong to the family Esocidae.

Here is a central mudminnow (Umbra lima).
