New hericthys bartoni

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When the eggs hatch and they are wrigglers, I start hatching bring shrimp eggs so food is ready when they become free swimmers and start to feed on their own, like the ones below.

Bartoni (at least for me) have been great parents, so i let them stay with the parents about a month.

They can be such good parents, that any other fish in the tank, could be in danger of losing their lives, so I either remove the other fish, or put in a divider.

Those other fish that can be in danger of losing their lives, can they be even bigger than the bartonis?
I can see how tough they are when in breeding mode and how they will chase the other bartoni away!
I wonder now, if I can keep any other kind of fish in their tank until the fry are ready to be removed as I was going to get some hericthys deppi or just add 1 female hait in the 75g
I assume its best to wait so that the bartonis don't stress out, or so the other fish dont lose their lives ;)

I would not add any other fish to the breeding tank, being new and at a territorial disadvantage, I would think you'd be adding them to the tank, to their immediate demise.
I had Lepidiolamprologus elongatus spawning on the other side of the divider, and they were wary of, and dominated by the smaller, breeding bartoni. And as you see by the pic, they have some serious defensive weaponry.

I see exactly what you mean Duanes, thanks for the heads up. no fish will be added during their breeding mode/time

Thanks Jason! You know ill hook you up with some fry once I have some :D
Can't wait to get that stunning hait!

MFK, I was able to get a 2min HD video of their Pre-Spawning behavior just to show you how aggressive they can be. The video shows their colors and their blue pearls that cant be seen in the pics ;)

Shadow was going up against the 2 females and ended up pairing with one of them and now they are about to spawn. Truly an amazing pair of tuxedo cichlids
