Now that beani are popping up everywhere now (and that is a really good thing), what is the next holy grail to own? I vote ramsdeni. When was the last time you saw one available? I haven't seen one since I got into the hobby 5 years ago. I have even seen folks with Cichlasoma ornatum, but not ramsdeni. The Cuban cichlid seems to have thrived in the hobby and many seem available, but no ramsdeni. I hope they have not disappeared completely.

Here is a youtube video of one.

Maybe some people, but I like the honeycomb look on beani.

I have heard of the ramsdeni before but I dont remember seeing one until i watched the video, it seems like a pretty crazy fish, not very colorful but if it has personality or a different color variant I could see it really taking off. I personally like having fish not many people have thats why I bought a pure trimac from Jeff Rapps. You dont really see pure ones at the LFS. And since ramsdeni appear to be pretty scarce in the hobby I wouldnt be surprised if it took off

What does a N. Ramsdeni look like?

Meh. These things pop up here about every 6 months and a few people go crazy and spend a fortune to have the newest greatest fish. Most of them are not available because when they came into the hobby they were not popular. There are several fish that are readily available that came from only a couple of pairs being brought over. They were successfull because they are colorful and people like them. Beani's were $50+ for 1-2" fish 3 months ago, now you could buy a beani or 4 convicts. Simple fact is that these fish faded away because not enough people like them. The same thing will happen with the next big deal. Some of you will go crazy on the next big hype and spend a fortune and have fry in a year you can't hardly give away.

I'm sure there are still lots of great fish to bring into the market and many of them will be popular and have continued success, but many of them will not. All I'm saying is buy a fish because you like it and want to keep it for it's lifespan. Don't buy fish because you get pulled into a bunch of hype and want to be the first to post a picture of MFK of your new super rare fish:D.

I tend to get fish based on my personal tastes and experiences. I also like having a variety of fish. To me, personality is the number one thing I look at and looks are the second. I had a love/hate relationship with grammodes until I got one that has a good personality. I sold all the others to other board members or traded them back to where they came from. I have to have a good experience with a fish before I keep it. I have fish that I don't list in my avatar b/c I haven't decided yet on whether or not I'll keep them. I don't breed fish either, so having a bunch of fry to unload isn't a problem for me. I like single males that are good representative specimens of the species. Everyone has different tastes and desires I guess. I'm satisfied with seeing pictures of the beani and learning about them right now. I'd like to begin seeing pictures and learning about the other "holy grails" as well. I do agree with everything you said jgentry. I do like it when i see something rare and different on the boards though.
