Uh....yeah. I like the beani fine and the honeycomb pattern works for me.

I'd like to see some H. steindachneri too.

I tend to get fish based on my personal tastes and experiences. I also like having a variety of fish. To me, personality is the number one thing I look at and looks are the second. I had a love/hate relationship with grammodes until I got one that has a good personality. I sold all the others to other board members or traded them back to where they came from. I have to have a good experience with a fish before I keep it. I have fish that I don't list in my avatar b/c I haven't decided yet on whether or not I'll keep them. I don't breed fish either, so having a bunch of fry to unload isn't a problem for me. I like single males that are good representative specimens of the species. Everyone has different tastes and desires I guess. I'm satisfied with seeing pictures of the beani and learning about them right now. I'd like to begin seeing pictures and learning about the other "holy grails" as well. I do agree with everything you said jgentry. I do like it when i see something rare and different on the boards though.

Then you are keeping them for the right reason. If you really are interested in a fish and want to keep it and can afford it that is great. I think that there are several extremely happy people with beani's right now that wil love them for years to come. Some of them might have even been waiting for this fish for a long time and I'm glad they were finally able to get them. But I also think there a tons of people that bought them just to have the next big thing and have already lost interest in them:(.

If you notice most of these fish get huge. All have been in the hobby at one time or another. The $15 beani on Aquabid are coming out a pond on an abandoned fish farm in Florida that bred them years ago and no one would buy them because they got to big and killed everything. When they became "The fish" recently someone went and checked and they were still in there breeding. In 6 months (or less) they will be $5 fish.

are there any ramsdeni available? is anyone breeding them? i've seen the pics on Rapps site. they might not be colorful but they still look amazing to me. almost like a mini haitiensis.

Incredible! Good info Ken. I was wondering about them. I'll bet those FL fish are hardy. I assume the ones from FL are Eddies. The folks in Portland are selling some for $15.00 as well, labeled as rio Tepic. They both have a good reputation I think. Thing I like about the beani is the personality they exhibit. Keeping one solo in a tank kinda takes out the whole killing everything part.

I'm looking forward to collecting Gymnogeos, chanchitos, pikes, and - maybe - some acaras and Geos in Uruguay in Dec.

As just about every body of water has different fish, we'll likely find something new (or at least new to me)!

For me it would be Cryptoheros altoflavus or Archocentrus spinosissimus.

You can buy spinosissimus right now. Conkel has then available. I would order some myself as it is a fish I'm looking for but he has a $150 minimum. Hoping to find some at the ACA. If not I might just have to break down and order them.

Very interesting Ken. I wondered how all of the sudden there were all sizes available.

Spinies are another one that was widely available for a little while...then gone.

I basically gave away two breeding pairs when I moved cross country about 2 years ago. No one wanted them.

And LFS acted like they were doing me a favor to take a dozen good-sized (2") grow outs for $1 each.
