My first official thread!! Hi Everyone!! :D
I have a Flowerhorn and a Tiger Oscar in a grow out 20 high. The FH is around 2 1/2" and the TO at 5". I've finally saved up enough money for a 75gal and was wondering, how should add both fish in the new tank? The TO will occasionally chase the FH, but that could be because their current home is small. No damage to either fish though. Both are very active. I'm sure they'll be happy when they're in their new home. :)

Also, another question. The 75 looks like it will be able to house a Silver Arowana. I've always wanted one an so have my parents. The new tank is wide enough so the Arowana can turn and also long enough to keep it swimming. What do you guys think? The Arowana I've seen at my LFS are around 5-6". Can it be done?

Thanks in advance for all the replies!! Love this place!! :headbang2

Hi welcome to MFK, Its good that you are upgrading your tank to a 75g. I'm not sure if you are aware that this will not be big enough to house the two fish you already have when they are fully grown. Aside from this FH tend to be way more aggresive than oscars when they are adult size so there is a good chance if you keep them together the oscar will get beaten badly. As for the arrow the 75g may look ok now but when it grows up it will need a larger tank.

I agree w/ Steve. It's good that you're upgrading b/c FHs get big quick. I have a 9" blue dragon FH in a 75 w/ a 6" red devil. They're male and female though so they get along good, :) The aro will be good in the 75 for a little while, but you're gonna need a bigger tank in about a year...and welcome to MFK, man...

Thanks for the welcomes and replies. I will use the 75gal as a growout tank for the Arowana and move it to a larger tank when it reaches over a foot or so. I'm sure I'll have the money for a much bigger tank then. As for my TO, I can place it in the same tank as the Arowana because I'm sure they'll keep to themselves and leave the FH in the 75gal. What size tank would I need to house a Silver Arowana?

Atleast a 6 footer... I'm no Aro expert, but I've seen how large they can get. I'd say a 180g for a silver would be a good fit. Maybe a 125g would work...

P.S. Check out www.craigslist.com for cheap, new and used tanks.

for an arowana you need the width to be the length of the arowana and the length to be double the length of the arowana, at a minimum. I don't care if someone says that silvers are flexible and can turn in a tank with less width than their length. Yeah it can be possible but its not very humane. It will stunt its growth and cause it to become deformed along with other health problems, or it will just bail out.

silvers get big, very very big, and thats the only arow you could keep with an oscar (jars too mean, asians are illegal) and those get well over 3 feet. So you are looking at a huge investment for this arowana, well over 1000$.

what you need is 2 seperate 75 gallons to house the 2 fish you have at adult size, or at least a 55 and your 75.

I gotta say NOOOoooo on the silver aro. An aro small enough to be comfortable in a 75 will not be safe with the Oscar and FH. Moreover, a silver aro needs at least a 180 and something 300+ is really more appropriate. If they are kept in too small of tanks they just jump out! Hold off on the aro my friend.

Itll give you something to look forward to. :)
