:iagree: among other things, nitrates don't evaporate. Waht your doing to the fish is detrimental to their health.

Dr Joe

.

I don't know about that. Since nitrate concentration is higher in the water, it will evaporate into the air (although not in the same form, perhaps in nitrogen gas?). It's just that nitrogen doesn't evaporate as fast as we want. In fact, doesn't Berlin filteration system rely on evaporation of nitrates from the live rock pores?

by putting a screen you are just increasing the amount of evaporation that you experience and thus increase the concentration of the wastes and toxins in the remaining water. you add water to keep the level up does dilute it. to me its not worth having to add water so often, because water costs money.

From reading this post and others, it seems to me you are looking for a way to get around doing water changes. Well if you change your type of fish to the one in the following link your problems will be solved.

C'mon you guys the thread is named new ideas for tank lids and he didn't even mention anything of the sort that water changes are now obsolete just because he replaces the evaporated water. Give the guy a break jeeeeez:screwy:

Nitrate has to be converted to nitrogen gas before it can be released from the water. If nitrates evaporated, water changes would be virtually unnecessary. That would be nice.
