Take your point on the NJ8000. Been looking into them some more and now realise they only pump 450cm of head! Not good. Now looking at the Aqua Medic 9000 they pump up to 4 mtr of head for 95 watts. Seems good to me. The Laguna that is also mentioned in the thread pumps 9000 at 3.7 mtr of head at 100 watt.

Not wanting to start another argument but 4 times turnover is fine for the filtration to work as long as it is big enough. Having said that I think the rays enjoy the movement and it helps clear the tank quicker with a fast turnover. I don't think you can have too much turnover (within reason) but you can add a lot of noise and power consumption needlessly.
Smaller filters need more turnover, your sump will be massive. Koralias can be added for extra tank movement and aeration (ripple the surface) but for proper dead spot removal you need a reef based wave maker as any flow will creat eddies that lead to areas building rubbish...I have tried it with massive amounts of flow and I ended up with a load of sand up one end and still build ups.

Take your point Toby, just trying to get this right first time. I think better turn over the better and don't want to be adding extra pumps at a later date.
Yeah agreed and you won't be disappointed with lots of turnover, you can always build in a t piece to go back in to the sump.
I cannot recommend enough a small pump to run a uv or just recirculate the sump whilst the main pumps are off for water change, it keeps the O2 higher and the bacteria fed with new water, if you can add some turbulence all the better (plus you don't have to turn off the uv when the pumps are off to prevent over heating)

I am also in the market for two new pumps for twin 700L tanks one on top of the other. So my head high is very high 2m (6FT) on one of the pumps. I have tried a few in the past on my current tanks and have gone back to eheim 1262. But I need much more LPH now than a 1262 can offer.
I have an Oase Neptun 12000 pump but that thing generates way to much heat. The Laguna I have also generated a little heat not as bad as the Oase. It does not seem to flow as much water as claimed it should. It is an old model about 4 years old but seen very little use.
The pumps I have been looking at are the Iwaki MD100RLT (jap motor) or the Red Dragon Royal exclusive RD3 75w version. I really like the built quality of the Red Dragon but at $900.00ea they need to be good.
I am a little lost just not sure which way to go. I would prefer two pumps over one bigger one just encase of a fail.
If anybody has the Red Dragon let me know what you think.

Brand new from Lotus, the new Olympus Eco Filter Pump range. These are a high performance energy efficient pump. The contoured cage and 6mm solids handling capacity means the pumps will need cleaning less. Fits hose size 20-40mm.
