New Juruense!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Congratulations!

Be patient. Don't transfer it too soon to the large tank. It is nearly emaciated. Exceedingly thin. It needs to almost double its circumference in the mid section to get some strength reserves.

Having starved juruense before up to 6-8 months (when weaning off live), I'd say this fish has not eaten in many months, perhaps half a year!

Wow thats a very long starvation period!

I am very worried about mine actually. Just got him like last week. He has not eaten anything as far as i am able to observe.

Active. Always swimming against the current. Just not responding to feed yet.

I don't. Not in his grow out tank. I'm familiar with their behaviors, but he's doing great as is . I do have a pump creating flow in the 265, in case he wants it .

Do you think i should remove the flow for the time being while he settle down in his environment?

This is not abnormal. It sounds that your juruense looks healthy and perky. If it was fed live before it has gotten to you, it will take a while for it to cave in. The period varies greatly among keepers.

They love the right flow. If yours is happy, as you perceive it and describe, then I don't see a reason to change the flow. In fact, throwing new feeds in the flow and letting it hit his barbels would trigger the feeding response much sooner than otherwise. This appears to be the way they hunt in the wild.

I'll try to feed mine more. He eats a night crawler in the evening and I give frozen mysis shrimp in the mornings. He's been eating since the day after I got him. But, I've only had him two weeks .He's about 5-6 inches.

Update. I've had him since the end of March. He's about 9" now. I've moved him to a 150. He's still not big enough to move to the 265..... He's doing very well.

Another update. My Juruense is about 15". He was about 4-5 inches when I bought him eight months ago. He's in my 265 gallon with a 16" silver Aro and a 20" marble motoro..... Doing great .
