i bought 3 red bellys about three weeks ago and theyre growing rapidly. but wat im worried about is they could be pacu. and i dont want pacu. but im wondering if there was a deffining difference when theyre young or when the teeth and jaw starts to become more defined. thanks

the jaw and fins are a dead give away. google for baby pacu pictures and red belly pictures and compare.

its pretty easy telling them apart.

There is also a thread in the sticky section that illustrates how to tell the difference.

a piranha jaw is more angular, while a pacu mouth looks similar to the way your face would look if you "shmooshed" your cheeks forward and tried to smile.....AKA FAT KID GRIN!!

Their eyes are also very different. I can't describe them very well. But if you see a picture of a young Pacu and a young P, you'll see what I mean....BTW what size are they at?

ok, yours are about the same size as my RBP(3-3/4"). I have a couple of pictures of him, one with a clear jaw. You should be able to tell the difference at this point. Since I could tell the difference between a 2" RB pacu, and a 2" RBP.

thats what i was afraid of cause mine do not look like that. im gunna try and get pics up. but i think their pacu which is really frustrating at 15 dollars a fish

Yes, please get some pictures up as soon as earthly possible, since Pacus are more trouble than most people can deal with. They're great-looking fish, but they get HUGE, and they'll bite through anything they can fit their mouth on.

And if they ARE pacus, you can still take them back and get the RIGHT fish, or store credit and they can order in the right one for you.

I should've warned you before. Just in case the eye is a concern for you (with the RBP pic) My red belly's eye is deformed on that side. Their eyes just look more "predator" than a pacu's.

Here's a small pacu.
