interesting read, a bit shocking in some areas but interesting. if i remember correctly didnt you put oak leaves in your tank at one time?

I am curious as to why you said this also? But I bet I know why you said it. but I still want to know why do you feel shocked?

I was trying to decide if it was the behaviour I described or my husbandry techniques! LOL Probably some of both!! :grinno:

Id have too agree with HCR and Boost cause i too was abit shocked to see the word FEEDER/GOLDFISH/EXCLUSIVELY all in one sentence...lol:WHOA:
but hey to each his own! He looks good so you must be doing something right...but im not a firm believer in feeders either (i breed my own feeders and still my pbass only eat live on holidays :D) and at first i was thinking you breed your own but 400 is alot and breed goldfish is not the thing to breed. But yeah out everything, i was even more surprised about the GOLDFISH!!!lol but GL hes gorgeous!!!

Shocking in what regard?

And yes on the leaves. Here are pics from that period.

im shocked about the ph, and how hard your water is and how you only feed them gold fish yet your fish are truely amazing... the auto water changer is deff doing them a lot of good since your nitrates are most likely zero if i had to guess... did you have the auto water changer when you had the oak leaves in the tank?... also how do you dose the tank for chlorine, chloramines and chloramides with the auto water changer? do you think they had better colors in the softer water? i would love to set up an auto water changer on my tanks.

Boostin I don't use any chemicals at all if any I mainly just use prime every three months or so other then that just water.

As for feeders I beileve feeders are the only way really 100% at least once a month throw 100 feeders in. I would do exclusive feeders if I could but that is expensive. I think that Scatacephlous his disproved a lot of the false truths around the hobby about Cichla and feeders. I feel they need feeders just as much as any other thing in there diet mainly because a happy fish will show it in it's colors. Cichla seem to be at there happiest when FEEDING on live it's part of there NATURAL INSTINCT! Not pellet's or frozen. But I didn't come to jack this thread and discuss views of food's. But I think the pictures speak for themselves. As for the PH I am under the belief that any fish wil adapt to what it's surroundings provide! As we see in all of our tanks. BUT I did look at the Ph comment twice myself but I can dig it.

lol yeah ... i don't use chemicals myself... bog wood and sometimes ketapang leaves (not sure about the spelling, west indian almond leaves) to soften water, prime or stress coat (usually use prime but if i run out i keep a back up of stress coat around. if they are banged up from fighting, the stress coat has aloe vera to help heal them up faster. i only add it with water changes, how anything you dose should be done) and once in a while i add kordans vita trace.. this stuff actually works wonders sometimes. i am about to cut the vita trace out and get some liquid vitamins to add to their food instead. i am about to do a bit of research on auto water changes.. i would love to set one of these up.. so i only have to gravel vacuum once a week and keep my nitrates to a minimum.
