i find knife fish tend to get alot of spot on their skin, it could be ick but highly doubt it because ick doesnt originate under they eye usually. And for the driftwood... Knife fish like caves, so it might be trying to use the driftwood as a cave if you do not already have one. Or if you do it could've not just noticed it.
