I would keep your temp on the low end of the spectrum, low 70's are fine, will reduce metabolism and help your fish live longer. A 55 gal will be fine for an African if you clear out some of the other mismatched occupants to make some space.

no, they get 8 usually. Hell, I don't think anyone on here has ever posted one over that size actually. Usually they seem to stop around 6ish.

you can get them to get used to the light..
 
I'd say roughly about 8" too but my question is, why didn't you do your research first before purchasing the fish? Also why didn't the seller tell you info about the fish, ask what inhabitants it would be going with?
The shop staff should really ask but you should also hold back and do research aswell if unsure :)
