Hey guys. I have attained a koi which is only 5in. Is there any special food that they just go nuts over? Thanks.

For my Koi the best foods that I have found out that they like are: Any of the Black Water Foods, The Saki Hikari line is excellent as well.....but the food that my Koi/ Goldfish absolutely go nuts over is the Dainichi line of food (it's pricey but worth every penny). Try their growth plus formula only if you want explosive growth from your Koi. My Yamabuki Ogon Butterfly Koi went from a 4 inch baby to a 13.5 inch monster in just under 6 months. The Dainichi line is my favorite as well as my Koi/ Goldfish.

Hope this helps you in your search for a good staple diet.

Thanks for responding. I have never heard of Dainichi...where would I get that? I will go on Hikari's website and check out the saki line. Right now Im feeding him hikari sinking carnivore pellets and cichlid sinking pellets along with beefheart. He likes them all but I havent seen explosive growth like yours did haha.

Koi aren't picky with food. They'll gobble up any pellets.

I agree, if you put it in the tank, chances are he'll eat it lol. Thanks for the link, there expensive. Do you think wolf96 that if I continue feeding him what I am, he'll still experience excellent growth? And yes, my water parameters are good! I feed him 4-5 times a day cuz hes in with my other fish that need the water temperature of 78 degrees. Right now, he's 5 inches and I've had him for a month and half. I'd say he was 2.5in when I got him. I asked the employee when they got their shipment and he said a few days ago. So im assuming hes on the younger side.

I definitely agree that Koi (and most Goldfish) will eat or try to eat any and all food that comes into the water.:) Jeep07 your Koi should experience great growth with any food especially if you do weekly water changes (they love fresh clean water), keep the oxygenation levels up and keep the water parameter like you are doing. Koi have great and fast growth rates especially in the summer when the water temperatures are around high 70's to low 80's. The main thing that I love about the Dainichi line is the quality of their ingredients. They really know Koi nutrition! I do notice extra vigor out of my fish at feeding time when I feed them the Dainichi vs other foods I have tried, but this is just my experience. There are lots of different Koi foods out there, find the one that your Koi seems to like best and that best meets your budget needs and they will do just fine!!!!

Im doing water changes i'd say every 4 days, theres no reason why my fish shouldnt have awesome water :D and I have several plants in there with excellent water agigation. So, there recieving good oxygen in there. Thanks for your help wolf96. All i have to do is wait untill hes large enough to put in my 125g :D

I forgot to ask you. What nitrate levels do you aim for? I try to keep mine below 60.

I usually keep my nitrate levels around 20 or below. I use a Aquaripure filter to accomplish this. My reading tonight was right at 15ppm. Most of my friends that keep Koi aim for the 15-30 ppm in Nitrates. I have heard that 40-60 ppm of nitrates are acceptable for Koi as well. 60 ppm is what i have heard of being the upper limits of what would be ideal. Hope this helps.
