NEW KOI

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just checked out those filters, very cool. I wish I had gotten those before. I wish i would of known more of all the products and stuff as I started the hobby, would save me money and time and be better for the fish. Do those systems also have a mechanical stage to them? This is a stupid question. I use the API test kit, now when I test the nitrates (this is always tricky because there are a lot of shades of red), do I hold the tube of water in in front of the card or should the tube be touching the card. I noticed, when the tube is touching the card, it's a different color (which represents a different ppm reading, which is important) as oppose to the tube not touching the card, but being very close to the card. Thank you.

Do you recommened anything else to help me lower my nitrates? I have 5 plants in there now and will be adding more in the weeks to come. I am also going to be taking my spotted raphael out because I never see him, I've had him for 6 months. I was also thinking about taking out my green pictus but he's a camoflague color so he's cool looking but I see him rarely.

I always hold the Test Tube up to the card in the white section next to the colored boxes. All of my friends that have been keeping fish longer than me do it as well so I assume it is the correct way to test. Reducing the bio-load (removing fish) will definitely help on your nitrate levels (or at least how quickly they will rise). The only other sure fire way that I know of the reduce nitrate levels would be to up the frequency of water changes or possibly changing a bit more water with each change. The Aquaripure definitely helps the nitrate levels as they are an amazing biological filter. I still would add some type of mechanical filter as that is not the Aquaripure's forte. I know full well the feeling of investing in equipment only to find out there are much better and efficient methods out there. Such is life in the aquarium hobby:) Each year my favorite LFS has a sidewalk sale where you can bring used items and sell them to other people as well as buy other peoples equipment and talk to them and see what they are using and if they like it or not. It has really helped me unload some of the items I have tried but then found something that I like better. Hope this helps!

Yes that helped a ton. I held my nitrate result to the card, not touching it and it came out to be somewhat orange with red, but it looked more orange so thats 20ppm. You may think im crazy but im planning on putting my koi in with my clownknive when he gets a little bigger. I'd say an inch or two. My koi is 6in and my clownknive is 17in. I've had my Ck for over a year and do know if a fish fits in their mouth they will eat it but seeing as the Koi is pracitcally 1/3 the length of the CK. Im not to worried. What makes me worried is the size of the CK's mouth  The CK is the only fish in the 125g but he has lived with a rtc before. I really want to put the KOI in the 125g but I want him to get a little bigger.

Also, i was reading another post in where an aqueon water changer was suggested. I didnt even know there were water changers. Once im done with reading on MFK. im going to google it.

Just searched it which I should of done before but I wasnt thinking lol. Whats the difference between an aqueon water changer and a siphon? I use a siphon.

The Aqueon Water changer uses the power of the running water from your sink faucet to create suction where as a siphon just uses gravity. I have never
used an Aqueon Water Changer. I use a Python Water changer which I absolutely love. Pythons are getting harder and harder to find but I hear that Lee's ultimate gravel vac us basically the same thing as the Python (most of the parts are interchangeable). The water changers definitely make water changes faster....at least for me.

I just ordered the dichini growth formula and their pro diet. I chose the medium pellets. My Koi is now 8in :). Will the medium pellet be a good size? And I tried putting him in the 125g today and it didnt work out. My clownknive went after him. Apparently, he can open his mouth larger then I thought. So Im going to grow him more in the 46g.
