New level of courting for these two

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've never seen anything like that before... I didn't even notice yours till you said something lol

When did you first notice her transition? I've never really kept a female over 6" or longer that 1-2 years.

I have a couple females thst are sisters now. One is orange and one white trimmed. They are around 5"? I think. Will see what happens with the orange one. I plan on keeping them till they pass

I'm not sure how well I captured it, but now that I look closely she does appear to be lightning a bit. Nice observation Stanzzzz7 Stanzzzz7

aztsm aztsm She is a real turd when it comes to a real measurement on size. Between 5 1/2-6" is my best guess.
I always knew my obsessive picture taking would come in handy. Haha It looks like it started changing back in January. Then less then a month later she laid her first batch of eggs.(feb 5th)
I got her on aug 5th of last year. So I've had her almost 9months.

I would guess she was round 4 1/2 or so when she first started changing.

Your girls dorsal does appear to be lightening up too. Keep us updated on if it continues to turn towards being white.

I was not good with photos back when, or at least saving them. But I was able to find one pic of another known female I had, with the same result.

Not even a full shot lol

Well look at that, haha.
Looks like Stanzzzz7 Stanzzzz7 found another good way to sex these rivs. It might not help with the little ones, but it would have helped me back when I was still holding out hope my girl was a boy. I could have started my search for a male sooner had I known.

To be honest another forum member asked me about this a while ago.
I do have a theory,if it holds any weight or not I can not say.
I think females that have come of age develope this white outline to appear bigger to predators in murky water.
Notice how spawning females turn white around the gill area. This with the white dorsal maximises the outline of the fish making them appear as big as they can to passing predators.
That's my theory anyway.
