In general, if a population of hybrid origin is self-maintaining, and especially if it expands its range into places where one or both parent species are absent, then it is considered a valid species. The parthenogenetic whiptail lizards are a good example. If, on the other hand, the hybrid population is maintained by constant new hybridization events, then it is considered a hybrid swarm. The European edible frog may be an example of this, though its exact status is still being studied and debated.
