Water fleas are usually used as fish food. They are tiny crustaceans and are easily recognized of their jerky vertical "swimming". They are completely harmless and really interesting creatures.
great photo, doesn't show physiology though, just morphology and anatomy.
that being said, daphnia are common in just about any FW fish tank, but if these fish were disc-shaped and attached to the gar they were more likely fish lice or some relative. daphnia are more rounded in shape that disc-shaped.
it's a good sign if they aren't on the gars any more, but if you see more (and fish lice are quite prolific) you may have to treat for them. before any treatment, however, it's important to get positive ID on the potential culprit. keep an eye out for more, and do your best to get a pic to ID and determine the best course of action--
