Hey all,

My first post on here although ive been reading the forums for awhile. I have a TSN (at least i think he is) that is about 1.5ft now. I say i "think he is" because after reading about how TSN's grow so massive I'm not quite convinced mine is a true blood TSN. He's just over 3 years old and while still growing isn't do so at any explosive rate despite varied healthy diet etc.

Anyhow, so I'm getting a new custom aquarium soon 96x30x30 for him to live in. Big upgrade from the 55 gal he is chilling in right now (bad TSN parent lol). I'm currently weighing options on what tank friends to incorporate into the tank with him.

So I do have a few questions:
I am almost 100% on aquiring Florida Gar to go with my TSN. Is there any other tank mates that would go along with a TSN AND Gar? How many gar, in your opinion, would do well in this type of tank? I'm weary of Birchir since they look like they would be snack food eventually for TSN and I havent seen much that strikes me as a "good have it" for this tank as of yet besides Gar. I looked into the thread in the Gar section about what fishies go good with Gar and didn't find to much except other Gar that strike my interests. (Oscars and cichlids arent of interest due to having so many tanks of them in the past)

Are TSN's rough on planted aquariums? I've never done a planted aquarium and its something of interest now that there will be some room. Nothing extrodinarily over done. Just a few plants that grow on drift wood etc for that natural setting look is what i have in mind.

Nice to meet you and thanks for the response ahead of time :)

Hey Bud! welcome! so first i would like to say im glad you're updating your tank size. If you post a picture the "experts" can help you id him. As for his size, i believe you do have a TSN and not a hybrid, most hybrids will be 1.5' in a year or less. For tank mates, maybe hold off. If you dont see somethign you Have to Have, maybe see how the gars and tsn get alogn and co-habitat. nothing worse than buying a fish and having it be eaten, to aggressive, or something else right? As for plantings, cats in general can be rough on plants as they are always searching for food along the bottom. so if there is food tangled in a plant, expect no expense spared in the acquisition of that food....my tsn tore apart a cave system made of 3lb rocks to get at my pike cichlid and pleco, both of which will r.i.p. so any tank mates need to be bigger than his mouth. my only fear for you is i'm not sure the florida gars will get big enough to stay off the menu forever. What you need to remember is that these fish at this size will be in deeper water that has more open space and less plants. so i go with a couple pieces of driftwood and a few flat rocks fo the bottom now. I've done diffused lighting via old shower doors and have a large mass of floating plants including a tray of mangroves that have thier roots extending into the water. Its really about taste.

OH I know it Mr. Biggles! That's why as soon as I knew I could afford it I was on top of getting a bigger more appropriate tank. I felt bad when he got so big to where he had to get a bit sideways to turn around. Unfortunately, when I originally got him I was not an informed buyer. I just thought it'd be a cool fish to go with my oscars at the time. Little did I know! However, my family really enjoy him so its worth it :)

I'd like to have a tank with something besides the TSN, thus the Gar since I figured they occupy a different area of the tank and get to be a good size that'd be a good choice. Is there anything else that can hang with TSN's? I've looked thru quite a few threads and there isn't much besides a silver arowana which are huge in themselves.

Heres my TSN: Any experts feel free to confirm/id him.

the guy you got here is a red tail catfish crossed(hybridized) with a tiger shovel nose. or just RTCxTSN for short. cool fish but gets really big. i would go with what the others said and try and get a wider tank if possible.
