OK before I start ranting on... I love the fact that we have people that come on the site to learn about new things and to share their experiences... but I am getting sick of these new members that come on tell us we have all been doing stuff wrong that we do not know what we are talking about but yet can never tell us the proper info or how they came about it.. all the advice I give comes from years of keeping fish and tons of research on different matters pertaining to fish.. I never give advice unless I know that it is sound.. so please if you are a NEWB and want to contradict something that a respected member here has typed have a proof of your sources so we can look them up ourselves because hear say info is not the way to go.. and just cause you had one experience with one little animal does not mean every animal will act that way... maybe I am just getting annoyed to easy latley but damm come on people we havent been around for so long and have so many members because we give out false info....

so sorry once again but some of the neww members need to chill the heck out.. I am not saying that its just one idividual I have noticed many latley contradicting many different older respected members my fav is when they try and tell a zoologist that they are wrong.. Did you go to college and graduate with a degree in marine biology??? No then listen to the people that did

Rottbo, i think i have seen what you are talking about.
I wouldnt worry yourself over it, some people just do not like to listen,
be it out of stubborness, or mixed opinions.
Ive noticed the veteran members do a very good job of informing new members/fishkeepers of the info they require.
But whether people actually listen or refuse to listen cuz its not what they want to hear, you cant do a whole lot more than try to better educate them.
If they refuse to listen i suggest instead of argueing, let them do what they will with the info that was provided to them.
If they choose not to follow the advice given i am sure they will learn first hand and A) swallow their pride and realize MFC member were actually helping
or B) give up the hobby cuz their fish keep expiring.
Like the old saying goes, "you can lead a horse to water, but you cant make him drink"

true true I just get tired of them trying to give other members their hear say advice so that maybe the member will try the un-proven advice.. and yes I kow I get a little worked up over this stuff thats why I always apologize for typing rude sounding statements I dont mean it to sound rude half the time but its comes out that way anyways... I guess I just wanted to rant on about it a little bit...

I totally agree with both of your posts. I will not post on something I do not know about for sure and I wish other people wouldn't either. I won't even post about fish I have kept unless I feel comfartable that what I'm talking about is the norm with that fish (don't know if you guys get what I'm saying there but I do;) It is frustrating when you post something that you KNOW then somebody comes in and says you are wrong. All I hope for is then other educated people will see that and post again what is corect to confirm it and outnumber the uneducated posters.

Disclaimer: By uneducated I mean about fishkeeping not in general:D

I assume this pretty much happens at every discussion forum.
Personally, I only visit this site and a couple of motorcycle related sites so i'm certainly no expert regarding the internet.
As a Newb to this site, I feel I can add something to this discussion. First, you found this site before me and any one else who is a newb. Is this some sort of great achievement? Does this mean your opinion is worth more than someone who hasn't been here as long as you? I mean, really, is this what you want to base the value of information on? How long some dude has been hanging out at a website? Me, I prefer to judge members, newb or not, by their posts, not by how long they have been hanging out at a website.
Next, The only way to validate an opinion that differs from yours is to offer proof of the source? Wow, at what point did your opinion become accepted law? You said your opinions are based on experience, is it not possible that my opinion is based on experience? All of this info is readily available on the internet or through reading books, do I have to tell you "I read it in a book" to gain your trust?
This website needs new members; this is how the site will continue to grow.
I don't know specifically what post you are referring to; perhaps the newb that inspired this post is indeed a d*ckhead but be that as it may, it isn't fair to have a holier than though attitude towards newbs just because you have more posts than they do. Some of us may have more years of experience than you.
I don't mean this to sound harsh so I apologize if it does.
On a sillier note, can you direct me towards the thread that inspired this post, i'd like to read it.:)

mmmmm I think what he meant and I know what I meant is newbs to fishkeeping. Not new people to the boards. Like when somebody says you can keep a male Dovii in a 55. I don't care how many posts they have THEY are the newb. If somebody with two posts comes into a thread and gives a great intelligent correct answer I think to myself "Damn we got somebody who knows about fish I hope he sticks around" I don't care less about post count. There are some people on here that have over a thousand posts but I still think they are ignorant when it comes to keeping fish.

We appreciate your oppinion and I guess I might have come off wrong but I wasnt trying to say just because a member is an old member that they know more its just that with and older member on the site you can find out from other members if what they say is true or if they are just spouting I guess the lenght of membership statement was just to say that many of us have been around here along time and most know that we are not trying to lead you astray from the correct ways to do things...
and I have learned many things from new members so I am not trying to say that new members dont know anything I am just stating that they guys who come in and try to contradict everything we say is really annoying... thanks for making me explain this because I didnt realize that it came across that way... and I was not trying to make it sound that way so I am glad taht I had to re explain myself it helps get the point across a little better IMO... I want to hear everyones oppinion but hate it when some one comes straight out and says "YOUR WRONG" when all my experience and research says that I am right... I hope that I did not turn you off to this site I am just ranting a little

Once again before I am gone for the day for work.. I am not trying to burn anyone just want people to listen before spouting unproven knowledge or atleast give us a source of your knowledge...

I am sorry Ella I hope that I explained myself better after reading my first post I did kinda sound like a jerk and a snob and I in no way meant to

Cool, I completely agree.
Doesn't make sense for a newb to the hobby to argue. Perhaps they are trolling or just stupid? Trolling at a fish forum?:D

I'd like to redeem myself by saying that I think this site is pretty cool. It's neat to find a place where everyone enjoys the same stuff as me. Sure, there are plenty of fish related forums out there but this one targets the fish I always had a soft spot for and even those I admired from afar but never kept.
