New Monster Driftwood

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When I get a new piece of drift wood I use hot water and scrub with a brush. Then I pre-soak it in a (new) rubber-maid garbage can with lots of salt that has only been used for this purpose. You should pre-soak for a few weeks it will help with the tannins and sinking the wood. After this process the amount of discoloration from tannins will be much less but the wood will still leech tannins for a few more months or even longer. Good luck I love the look of a nice piece of drift wood in a tank. Oh and like Kyle said the tannins and the wood will help some fish spawn and will help lower stress in the tank.

I'm aware if tannins being unharmful and possibly helping with spawning. I also somewhat enjoy the tannin colored water look though with a piece this large I let it sit in a bath tub of very hot water a few times to work some of the tannins out and was surprised how much was removed during the first soak. I thought I posted photos in the first two posts but clearly it didn't work, as soon as I get to my laptop I will post some photos.
