New to this forum, but I'm assuming you use those dish scrubbers as a cheap DIY version of bio filtration. Ever consider a simple DIY fluidized sand bed? I have one of these in my 75G cichlid tank made from 4" PVC and it seems to work well for converting to nitrate. I'm still experimenting w/ de-nitration using Deep sand bed in a FW system.

thought about the sand filter but really like the ease of a wet/dry setup
and so far it works great
