So i picked up a 7" Motoro ray last night. He seems to be doing good so far. They said he was on ghost shrimp

I put some harraki massivors in there and he didnt eat them which i figured he wouldnt. i'v kept rays before but fed them blood worms which can get expensive. I dont want to start feeding blood worms or ghost shrimp at this point.

Can i try feeding cut up shrimp/squid for now? What are my other options for initial feeding so i can start getting him a healthy level.

A I have retic and he's more finiky but from what I've read shrimp, squid, also tilapia. If you need some live food nightcrawlers are a good source.

mine took krill pretty easily and like said above nightcrawlers are a favorite

Sorry, never heard of either.

Do you get these at like a grocery store or at a aquatic store? Are they cheap or pricey?

Blood worm is not big enough for anything but very small rays.

If you were "told" that it was eating ghost shrimp then I personally feel that you have broken one of the rules of buying a healthy ray. You need to personally see it feed on a variety of food. My guess is that it is wild caught and they couldn't get it to eat anything else. They may also have simply lied and it isn't feeding at all? If I did not know the seller then I would place a good deposit and visit a few times to view it feeding on more than one food type....ghost shrimp should be an alarm bell to anyone buying a ray.

Night crawlers are earth worms. Krill is a shrimp and available frozen from food stores. I am worried about your comments about price of food....rays are never cheap to feed and if the cost of krill or bloodworms worries you then you need to worry as a ray will eat a load of quality food as it grows, many people spend over 100 dollars per month.

You will need to be patient and maintain it on a minimum of ghost shrimp that you can get away with, use other moving foods such as bloodworm and earth worms from a bait shop but only in the short term whilst you add in other foods like the pellets.

Have a search around as people have soaked other foods in with blood worms etc to show the rays other foods.

They will often take a few days to settle anyway....keep the lights off and maybe cover part of the tank for a few days.

i wouldn't take them from your yard or drive way... never know what chemicals you might be feeding to your ray... i wouldn't take that chance

I have always had success with earthworms. make sure they are kept really clean and then break them apart if they are really large before you feed. The worm juice seems to get the rays really going for them. I might suggest treatment with Prazi Pro too if you canot get him eating after a few days. Blood worms could also help jump start him eating if the earthworms dont. After they begin to eat earthworms and/or bloodworms you can begin to introduce shrimp. They may not take to it for a while but when they do they really gorge themselves. Best of luck to you!

Mehh. if you know what goes into your yard then it's safe. I've been doing it for years and still havent had a problem. Pesticides have also been banned for the past couple years in toronto so it's even safer than before.
