Went back to the river to collect more shiners (lost most of them in the holding tank) and replenished the numbers. As a bonus, I caught what I thought was a 1.25" margined madtom and added it to the tank. While trying to determine if it was, and not just another tadpole tom, I learned it was actually a yellow bullhead fry... Hopefully I see it again to remove it before it gets big enough to eat everything!
Went out fishing on the river and caught my first dollar sunfish (or first I recognized as a dollar)!
The pickerel is gone... it grew quickly (.75" in a month!) and started picking off topminnows. I knew it would be going after the smallest bluespot soon. I transferred it to the 10g "food" tank and was going to try to give him away here, but he was floating in the morning.
Things have been stable. The dollar rules the tank but hasnt been overly violent to the bluespots. The madtom and spots are growing. Water changes are actually slightly more difficult because i want to keep my tannins. I change about 30%/wk and have to add oak leaf tea i brewed each time. Definitely pull the trigger on sunfish when you can. They are just as personable as the big cichlids.
