I think we've decided on a coldwater british stickleback biotope!! we're maybe going to try and breed them aswell once they've settled in. Defo posting pics once it's set up
Well we finally managed to get into gear and set up the aquarium last week. We got a good deal on gumtree, a 15 Gallon all glass tank for £10! 24"x12"x12". The tank also came with a small stand AND a light controller. We bought a new 18" tube and small internal power filter (TetraTec IN300). Small branches were collected from Loch Leven, Fife, to create a more natural appearance. Standard sand was also added along with some small pebbles. This tank was supposed to be setup specific to scottish lochs, so the addition of a few bunches of egeria densa was justifiable. However, the addition of some cabomba may be contriversial. We justified this though, as even though cabomba isn't native, and in fact an invasive species, its still can be found in scottish lochs. After at least a weeks fishless cycling, we hope to add 3 or 4 three spine stickleback to complete the setup. Pics will be up as soon as possible so watch this space!! Also, does anyone know of some relatively small coldwater shrimp/invertebrates from Scotland that would go well in this setup??
no they are not found in scotland. They are from asia I'm pretty sure, and are now very difficult to find in the wild, as they only live in small creeks/streams at high altitudes.
Yeah i agree, but part of our excuse of having this tank is that we set it up relevant to our work. I'm part of a freshwater ecology group in Edinburgh, who do field work and analysis on scottish freshwater lochs. We chose Loch Leven to replicate, since we visit there every fortnight. Therefore, we're trying to keep it specific to this loch, so we can almost justify having this in the office, as the management probably wouldn't be too keen on having this amount of water around computers lol
Any ideas on the sludge coming from the wood? Or any further stock?
i didnt mean that they were from the right landmass, but that you can buy them on the right landmass for the OP who lives in scotland, i live in the south of england, i think its the same continent
