i bet u the price of that fish, that the senegal doesn't eat it. i think my view was off by an inch. looks to be smaller by 2 or 2.5 inches, i still think it'll be fine

ok maybe not WAY bigger, but still big enough to pickon him, but probably not eat him i agree.

i think there will be no problem if the diff. of their sizes is 2-3" it will be fine i have 8" ornate ,( 2 ) 8" P.Sen , 7"delhezi 6" albino sen ,(2 ) 5" and 3" P. Poly in my 50 gal tank and doesnt seen any problem .

It really depends on the agressiveness of the senegal. The size difference is great enough that if it wanted to it could easily dispatch the onate which could be fatal to the senegal also, the dorsal finlets are needle sharp and I guarantee the ornate will know how to use them-Anne

I dont want to risk it. the ornate is about 2.5-3 inches. my senegals are about 6... the others a little bigger... judging by the size of their mouth i think they cud easily take down the ornate is they wanted to... the ornate is also still really thin... its like a worm to them... i think in mass the ornate is probably 1/4th their size... plus i got some 5-6 inch oscars too n i dun think i can trust them...

I think the ornate would be fine with the senegals. I would worry more about lower jawed polypterus than upper jaw polypterus. Personally, I've never had a canniblism incident, and I currently have a 16" ornate with a 6" Del (and lots of other species in sizes in-between) in one of my tanks. Although, I do keep a 3" or so albino semi-SB in a grow-out tank, and I wonder if he'll catch up.

I think it'll be harder for the ornate to keep up growth along with the oscars. Oscars tend to eat larger quantities much faster than polypterus, they process the food faster and experience rapid growth.

I am aware of this, I am making sure that the polys get their food before the oscars snatch it all up
i usually feed the oscars pellets and then drop in a shotglass with the food for the polys... they are thin and can put their heads in n grab the food... the oscars cant get in far enough to get the food... so far the polys seem to be growing just as fast if not faster

I wouldn't do it... my 6 inch delhezi decided to try to take out a ~3.25" roseline shark, couldn't eat him, but he killed him by trying to eat him. It was a sad day.

we were worried he'd choke, but eventually he let go, and the poor dead roseline just floated to the top... a waste of $25.

my opinion:

put him in.but...
-make sure they're fed well. I've got a 10.5 in senegal, 9 in endli, 2x 8 in male senegals (very naughty ones) in a 100 g tank with 4.5,5,& 6 in dels (and some other med size ornates, palmas, etc. ) nobody is even attempting to eat anyone because they are constantly fed.

-make sure you know your bichirs. particularly their attitude towards other fishes in the tank. my big girls are not really aggressive. won't even touch a guppy unless their hungry.

-take out the oscars. :)

otherwise, let him grow out first.

5 bucks for a baby Ornate..:WHOA:

that's a jack. Congrats, good luck with him he looks awesome
