Lol he'll get nice and dark with that black sand. Nice looking little guy where did you get him?
 
And that is finally an ornate with similar markings to mine! I have a somewhat dark but not black substrate ( I would like to be able to see poop, to suck it out with a turkey baister right quick ), I would like to keep him the way he is not get him darker! Makes him look less like the typical ornate! I'll try n find a good pic of mine

This was right after I got him in the QT tank next to my bed, he's about 8 in... more around ten now, and hasn't gotten darker!

The substrate I have is called Tahitian moon sand its made of lava rock so its real light but not cloudy and very soft it wont scratch up bottom fish. But I want him to be jet black and gold he is a good size guy though.

Dr.B- I got him from my local small fish store I ordered him for a massive $40 lol
