How much are silversides for you? I think most of us feed tilapia because it bulks the bichir up faster.I like Silversides over Tilapia for small polys if you're not strapped for cash. They're the whole fish so are superior IMO. You have to cut it up in small bits so for one baby poly you won't go through it all that fast. (Freezer section of LFS/Petco or Asian market.)
Most peeps here do tilapia because they have 15 - 567 large lower jaws and feeding Silversides to that crew would be like tossing money in the tank.
Don't forget the nice clean water for growth!
Congrats on getting into polys!![]()
I'm not sure - I got a big bag last time and I haven't gone through them yet so it's been a bit since I bought them. How much are silversides for you? I think most of us feed tilapia because it bulks the bichir up faster.
It's what I have seen from my feeding experience. Sound ridiculous I know. I used to feed smelts(similar to silverside). I fed them whole smelts but I stopped due to thiaminase. I've had some fish eat only tilapia, and some only eat smelts, and of course the ones that ate both benefited the most. But from what I noticed the fish eating just tilapia got them thicker faster than the ones eating just smelts.I'm not sure - I got a big bag last time and I haven't gone through them yet so it's been a bit since I bought them.
Are you saying that you think tilapia will bulk up a fish more than whole fish with heads, organs, etc?
BTW do you have photos of your silverside? I'm starting to get confused on what silverside/smelts are. I'm searching online and I'm seeing mixed photos.Interesting. That doesn't make sense at all to me (but I believe your experience). You'd think that getting the whole fish would be more nutritious, more like what they would eat in the wild, and therefore be better for them....
