I have raised one oscar from about 1in long to 9 1/2in and two 6in oscars and like every1 said feed them as much as they want i feed mine blood worms once a day and for the rest of the day i feed em small amounts of hikari floating color enhancing pellets(red ones) and the love them. I also get them feeders 2 times a week

I would stay away from feeding them feeders that often. True it is fun to watch them go crazy over the feeders, but as i learned the hard way, feeders are usually diseased pretty badly to the point that your oscars can develop severe problems. Mine just got over both cloud eye and pop eye. The bill to fix that was close to 150 for me...(too f****** expensive) just because I fed them two dozen feeders.

but like everyone is saying 80 degrees, medium hardness for water, all the food they can handle and use variety, no nitrites, 7.5 pH and you will have dogs for fish... :woot:

now that i think about it i dont get to the store that often so it is more like 1once a week. I have been feeding him feeders alomst all his life but mostly blood worm gum drops. i get my feeders from a reliable place not Petsmat or Pet co. it is a small personal store that i get all my fish from and he feeds his the same feeders. he is a fish hobbyist him self.

OK...my first fish was a oscar and let me tell u they love anything thaat has a tast and things that dont i have spoke to many a friend and have had people ask how come mine was so vibrant and lively "oscars are llivly period but..."i fred mine mice blood worm lizardd and a baby quail also beef heart and other things feeding a oscar nothin but pellets is ok and all but it makes for a colorsless oscar and they cant get all there nutrents from pellets so i disagree when the say "stay away from freeders" but do watch were u get them from and how good the freeds look if there upside down on a filter or just floting thats would b a no but if they look health i say its good for them. any way i gave my oscar to a friend cause so far i have a had 2 tanks breaks and i had no tank when i had to leave him but i still get pics off him every so often i also have videos of him with freeders and dropping in a mouse if u would like to c email me....i love oscars they are so friendly and i think u will get attacht very quick! :headbang2

This is just not true. A good quality pellet like Hikari Cichlid Bio-Gold or Omega One Cichlid will color up your fish better than feeders and be much healthier. Really, anything is better than feeders--flakes, pellets, frozen worms and seafood, insects, etc.

Hope this helps you.

I agree that you are much too overcrowded, probably even before you added the oscar. I grew an oscar up to 12 inches in a 29-gallon tank with a couple of Jack Dempsey's and a pleco, and even that was much too crowded. Back in my early days of fishkeeping. He's in a 125 gallon tank now with just a few buddies. Oscars will eat any tank mates that fit into their mouths, but they really are not usually all that aggressive or hard to care for. If you want to keep him in a 20-gallon, you will have to get rid of EVERYONE else. Good luck!
